Mind Over mixbus

This is a list of music equipment that I use for making music, along with a bit of commentary. There are no affiliate links or anything like that. It's just my two cents on equipment that you might find useful.

Computer: Mac Studio M3 Ultra

This is a more recent acquisition, and it's really a beast. I've been using Macs for music production since 2008, and this is my favorite machine so far. The power is incredible and I love the form factor. It's small, but has all the connectivity that I need.

Audio Interface: Universal Audio Apollo X6

I've had a lot of interfaces over the years, including a few other variants of the Apollo series. This unit is the only thing that has kept me from buying all kinds of hardware units to use in my recording setup. I want to have a minimal amount of equipment to get the job done, and the UAD ecosystem helps me do that. The plugins are great, and allow me to commit to sounds early and not have to worry about remember hardware settings, etc. The preamps are nice, the build quality is fantastic, and even though it only has two combo inputs, I could expand it with ADAT if I needed to. But I won't. My only gripe (and it's a small one) is the headphone amps. When I'm tracking vocals, I've really got to crank the headphone volume. Not a big deal, it just feels weird having to turn the volume knob so far.

Studio Monitors: Currently None

I just sold the set of Kali LP-6 monitors that I've had for the last 5 years or so. They're phenomenal speakers, not even just for the money. They just sound great. They're plenty loud, have a relatively flat sound, and can be adjusted for different room/desk configurations. I only sold them because I'm shrinking my desk down and need something smaller. Looking at Adam Audio D3Vs, so we'll see how that goes.

Guitars: A Few

I'm bad with remembering the models, but I'll get them. I just sold my Jericho Walnut Fusion to make way for a Cort KX700. I like it so far, though the fret ends need to be filed a a bit. I also have an Eart GW2 headless guitar, which has been fun to try, but is't going to stick around. For acoustics, I have a full body Taylor (can't remember the model) and my mom's old Yamaha classical guitar from the 60's. Also an Ibanez SR755 bass.

Microphones: Shure SM57, SM58, Townsend Labs L22

I can't think of the last time I used my SM57, but it feels like you just have to have one in the studio. The SM58 is my live workhorse and I also use it in the studio with Dubler 2 (an audio to midi plugin that allows you to perform virtual instruments with your voice. Very cool.) The Townsend is my primary microphone. The things I record live are vocals and acoustic guitar. So I don't need or want a mic locker. But the L22 is a modeling microphone that can emulate 30+ classic microphones. You can even use it in such a way that you can change the mic, polar pattern and other settings after you've recorded, which gives great flexibility. It's my "one mic to rule them all".

Virtual Instruments:

There are many. Stay tuned.

Favorite Plugins:

This is also a long list. I'll get to it.
